Winter Tires

More than half of Canadian drivers install winter tires on their cars. Winter tires are not only useful in snowy conditions, but also perform better than all-season tires at temperatures below 7°C. Simply put, winter tires are made to maintain superior traction in cold weather, as well as icy, snowy, or slushy roads.

Winter tires use special compounds and are able to remain softer, allowing tires to handle the road better in extremely cold conditions. This feature, along with deeper tread depths, and extra cuts and tread blocks, are what make winter tires perfect for extreme cold.

Remember - winter tires are designed for cold conditions. Once it's starting to warm up, it's time to change back to all-season tires. Flexible, softer winter tires wear down quickly in warm conditions. While high-quality winter tires are much better in that regard, using winter tires year round still isn’t recommended.

All Season Tires

Vehicles are equipped with all-season tires when they leave the factory. That’s great for most times of the year. However, all-season tires don’t provide suitable traction for extremely cold temperature. That’s where winter tires come in. Winter tires provide superior handling capability in a variety of cold weather conditions and are recommended for their versatility. In weather above 7°C summer or all-season tires are appropriate.

Generally speaking, winter tires and summer tires are on exact opposite sides of the spectrum, with all-season tires in between. In a best case scenario you can get yourself all three types of tires and keep changing them depending on the season. The next best thing for Canadian drivers is to equip their vehicle with a set of all-season tires and a set for winter. You can browse through our online catalog above to find a set of tires for your vehicle.

Checking Your Tire Size

You need to get new tires but how do you check your vehicle's tire size?

This information can be found on the driver's side door, on the placard. This is usually found on the inside of the door jamb.

The placard has lots of valuable information, including your stock tire size. The stock size of your tire is the size of the stock set that your vehicle came with from the manufacturer. If you have purchased new rims or tires, the ones you currently have on your vehicle may be different than the set it originally came with.

The tire size can also be found on the tire! It will be in large letters and numbers on the side of your tire. The tire size will usually start with a P or LT. Example: P225/60R16

Proper Maintenance

Maintaining proper air pressure is important for tire warranty, fuel economy and your tire's life expectancy. This information is also found on the placard, located on your door jamb.

The best way to store your tires is to keep them in a dry, cool place and out of the sun.

You'll know it's time to put your winter tires on when the weather reaches 7°C. Don't wait too long to put them on though. Once the first snowfall touches the ground, the shop gets very busy!

Cooksville Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram has a wide selection of winter, summer and all-season tires to choose from with competitive rates on both tires and labour.
