The 3.0-litre Hurricane SO twin-turbo leads the 2027 Ram 1500 lineup on towing, at 11,530 lbs (5,230 kg). The 5.7-litre HEMI V8 eTorque sits close behind as the clear runner-up, at 11,370 lbs (5,157 kg), a gap of only 160 lbs (73 kg). Both configurations are built specifically to move heavy trailers.
Every 2027 Ram 1500 comes standard with 4x4 in Canada. That matters for towing because every figure in the table above already reflects a truck sending power to all four wheels, not a lighter-duty rear-drive rating. Traction at hookup, on a wet boat ramp, or on loose gravel comes built in across the lineup, not as an upgrade.
Transmission calibration plays a bigger role than most buyers expect. The 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 eTorque pairs with a TorqueFlite 850RE eight-speed automatic, while the 5.7-litre HEMI V8, 5.7-litre HEMI V8 eTorque, both Hurricane I6 engines, and the 6.4-litre HEMI V8 all share the TorqueFlite 8HP75. The 6.2-litre supercharged HEMI V8 in the Rumble Bee SRT gets its own TorqueFlite 8HP95, a heavier-duty unit built to handle 777 horsepower.
That 8HP95 pairing explains why more power does not automatically translate to more towing capacity. The Rumble Bee SRT’s 777 hp and 680 lb-ft outmuscle every other engine in the lineup, yet its 8,580 lbs (3,892 kg) tow rating lands in the middle of the pack. Its transmission and gearing favour acceleration rather than sustained pulling, which is a different calibration problem than towing a loaded trailer for hours.
The best towing setup is not automatically the best payload setup. The 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 eTorque carries the highest payload in the lineup at 2,340 lbs (1,061 kg), yet its 8,100 lbs (3,674 kg) tow rating trails the Hurricane SO by nearly 3,430 lbs (1,556 kg). A buyer hauling gravel, tools, or equipment in the bed week after week gets more out of the V6 eTorque than from a bigger-displacement engine tuned for pulling.
The Hurricane SO twin-turbo, by contrast, still holds a strong 1,880 lbs (853 kg) payload alongside its towing lead, making it the closest thing to an all-around answer if both a heavy trailer and a loaded bed show up on the same weekend.
The Rumble Bee family illustrates the trade-off directly. The Rumble Bee runs the 5.7-litre HEMI V8 at 395 hp and 410 lb-ft, towing 8,890 lbs (4,032 kg). Step up to the Rumble Bee 392, and its 6.4-litre HEMI V8 makes 470 hp and 455 lb-ft, built for stronger acceleration rather than a higher tow number.
The Rumble Bee SRT tops the muscle-truck trio with 777 hp from its supercharged 6.2-litre HEMI V8, a straight-line performance mission first. Trims like TRX SRT and RHO follow the same pattern, built around speed and terrain capability rather than chasing the lineup’s highest tow rating.
Towing capability on the 2027 Ram 1500 comes down to the engine bay, not the trim label. The Hurricane SO twin-turbo and HEMI eTorque V8 top the lineup, while other powertrains trade towing for payload, performance, or value instead.
